Vice President

Vice President - Ian Caley

Ian Caley.

Ian is one of Britain's best-known and most versatile tenors with a repertoire stretching from Pre-Classical to contemporary.  He had been an active supporter and mentor for Harrow Choral Society for many years before agreeing to become our President in 2009 following the death of Sir Richard Hickox, our previous president.  Unfortunately, Ian felt compelled to retire from the role in 2019 on health grounds but we were delighted that at the beginning of 2022, he accepted our invitation to become our Vice President.  We look forward very much to continuing our long and very happy association with him.

Ian’s professional debut came at Glyndebourne several decades ago alongside Dame Janet Baker and Benjamin Luxon where he was awarded the John Christie Prize for the outstanding young singer of the season. He also sang regularly with the English National Opera and the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, soon followed by Opera North and Scottish Opera where he became a regular guest. By this time, his career had become established in Europe, developing firstly in France, then in Italy - including at La Scala, Milan -  Switzerland and Germany. His Paris Opera debut was in the Palais Garnier and, within a few years, he was the Paris Opera’s most-engaged foreign artist.

Alongside his opera work, Ian has always had a varied and much-enjoyed concert career working with major international conductors. It has taken him to most European countries as well as to the USA, Canada, Israel and Japan.
